Talking About Clawson’s Roads and Infrastructure

When I’m out walking through our neighborhoods and chatting with residents, one topic always comes up: our roads and infrastructure. From street conditions and flooding in certain areas, to sidewalks and city repairs—it’s something everyone notices because we all live with it every day.

And almost every time, the same questions come up:

  • Why does it take so long?

  • How does the city decide which areas get fixed first?

  • When will they finally get to my block?

Those are fair questions—I’ve asked them myself. The truth is, infrastructure is one of those things that everyone relies on, but most of us don’t get to see how the process works behind the scenes.

Here’s what I think Clawson can do better:

  • Keep people in the loop. Yes, the City website has information, but let’s be real—not everyone goes there. We should use other ways to get the word out—social media, neighborhood updates, email lists, even old-fashioned flyers if that’s what it takes—so people aren’t left wondering what’s going on.

  • Make the work less disruptive. Some delays are outside the city’s control, but with better planning and coordination with contractors and utilities, we can keep projects moving more smoothly.

  • Be fair about priorities. Every neighborhood matters. Yes, the city has to look at the big picture, but we also need to make sure that blocks that have been waiting a long time don’t keep getting pushed to the back of the line.

If I’m elected to Council, I’ll push for clear communication, smarter coordination, and a fair approach so residents don’t feel like they’re left in the dark.

At the end of the day, people just want straight answers and steady progress. If we can improve how the city talks about and manages this work, it will go a long way toward building trust—and making life in Clawson a little smoother (literally).
